Counting Switches

With your counter set to zero, begin by counting single pole switches.  Remember, you will only be counting single pole switches on your counter.  As each single pole switch is counted, color the switch symbol in a circular motion with a green pencil.  When you come across a switch other than a single pole, color the switch with the green pencil, mark the symbol on the bottom right of the drawing and keep count of that new switch symbol by using hash marks:

To count switches in a multi-gang arrangement, mark the symbol on the bottom right of the drawing and use hash marks to keep count.

Example

Symbol on drawing

1. Mark the two gang symbol on bottom right of drawing.

2. Enter two clicks on the counter for two single pole switches.

3. Enter one hash mark for the two gang ring and plate.

1. Mark the three gang symbols on the bottom right of the drawing.

2. Enter two clicks on the counter for two single pole switches.

3. Enter one hash mark for the three-way switch count.

4. Enter hash mark for the three gang box, ring and plate.

When you have finished counting switches on that drawing, mark the single pole switch symbol on the bottom right of the drawing and enter the amount taken from the counter.

Count and color switches and their ganged arrangements as fast as you can.  Do not count just count single pole switches first and then go back through the drawing and count different switches such as three-ways and four-ways.  If you do not color and count them as you find them; you will spend too much time going back over the drawings looking for the symbols or you may be interrupted and forget them entirely.  Don’t worry about missing any symbols; any that you miss will be found by the system.  The system has also provided you a second opportunity to look for light fixtures.

Follow this same procedure for each drawing until all switches have been counted.
